Professional Measurement on SHDSL 4-Wire Accesses

intec presents a SHDSL 4-wire option for its well-known ARGUS 145 tester

Lüdenscheid, May 2007. SHDSL 4-wire accesses are gaining market share both abroad and here at home. Therefore, intec's ARGUS 145 - its most flexible handheld tester – is now also available with additional measurement functions for SHDSL 4-wire lines. Those who already have an ARGUS 145 tester can upgrade it to add support for testing SHDSL 4-wire accesses. Like all of the ARGUS 145’s other functions, the SHDSL 4-wire functions can be conveniently selected from the menu at the press of a softkey – no module swapping is necessary. The SHDSL 4-wire option completes the ARGUS 145’s extraordinarily broad repertory of supported access types: In addition to its support for SHDSL 2 and 4-wire lines, it also offers tests for ADSL, ADSL2 and ADSL2+ as well as for POTS, U-interface and BRI accesses.

Comprehensive Test Functions
The complete suite of tests and operation modes, which the ARGUS 145 already offered for SHDSL 2-wire lines, are now also available for the SHDSL 4-wire variant. This suite of tests includes among others IP ping, traceroute, download and upload, bridge and router functions plus VPI/VCI scan, ATM OAM ping and OAM loop tests. In addition, the ARGUS 145 can count the number of repeaters used in the route. The tester supports both the STU-R and the STU-C mode. It is also possible to use the ARGUS 145 on a TDM access.

The options available for the ARGUS 145 include support for VoIP terminal simulation, statistics functions as well as a function for evaluation of IPTV and VoD data streams. Furthermore, the tester offers an Ethernet Through mode as well as a Router Replacement mode with support for DHCP (Client and Server). Resistance and capacitance measurements are available to check the physical characteristics of the subscriber’s line. On 4-wire accesses, the ARGUS 145 displays the measured connection parameters by wire pair.

On a 4-wire interface, the ARGUS 145 achieves a data rate of 4608 kBit/s in accordance with the ITU-T 991.2 Annex A and B standards.

The next release of the ARGUS 145 will also offer enhanced SHDSL measurement options for both 2 and 4-wire lines. Existing ARGUS 145s can then be updated to support this additional functionality by simply downloading the associated firmware update.

intec GmbH
intec GmbH has been engaged in the development of ISDN products for more than eighteen years. Since 1998, intec has specialized in the development and production of ISDN test equipment. It expanded in the last four years to include ADSL measurement equipment. The common thread over all these years has been equipment clearly designed to support users in their day-to-day work. ARGUS testers and analyzers are not only used by many German telecommunication companies such as Arcor, Deutsche Telekom, ISIS in Düsseldorf and HanseNet in Hamburg, but also worldwide – for example by Telefonica (the largest Spanish network operator) and Telekom Austria.
